SciFi and Fantasy Art Blast From The Past: Escape! by Barbara J. Wickham

Back in high school myself and a friend used to have many great adventures. We felt that our journeys should be recorded so I started drawing the best parts of our experiences. Of course, our stories were all made up in our own minds and the characters were pure imagination, but we didn’t care too much about that. We had fun and that was what counted.

Here Kira has gotten herself caught yet again. She seems to have a talent for trouble and, as usual it’s up to Mara to bail her out. I hope those orcs don’t notice what’s going on...

Kira was a hothead. There’s no other way to describe her. Her rash actions were the sparks for some very interesting incidents. My poor friend had to spend most of her time thinking of ways to get Kira out of trouble. I have to wonder what it was in my own character that kept influencing me to act so recklessly thru Kira. Hmmm...

*Very simple, very quick pencil sketch done between classes at school, between 1984 & 85. An oldie, but goodie!

This sounds like the sort of stuff my friends and I used to come up with -- somehow my characters were always either the boy-crazy, insane, ranting old women, or the innocent, feminine, loving, all-powerful wizard maiden. But I digress. I'm so glad to see some of your old artwork; it fills me with nostalgia -- and I can see that you've always had your wonderful knack for composition and fun characters. Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Hmmm. There should be a specific psychoanalytical category for role players. I'm sure and examination of this phenomenon would be fascinating! Ahem… In my case, a little disturbing as well… Either way I really miss the FUN I had doing these little drawings. I am actually trying to get back to the old ways in some drawings I'm doing now. It really was a good idea for me to go thru the old stuff because it has ignited a spark in me that I hope will continue to grow. I will try to get the new drawings up just as soon as I get some more done. They are all character sketches done in colored pencil but it's a start, eh? Thank you for commenting on these old pics. If anyone can appreciate the special-ness of these pics, it is you. hugs"
29 Jan 2006	Brandon ´Red´ Christ	Loading... I wish I could draw... The lead hand doesn't help >_< . Well, anywho, this is a really good piece of art. I enjoy works like this, especially when it's just the raw image... it has a... hmmm... spice to it, perhaps? Well, anyway, ONTO THE NEST ONE! Barbara J. Wickham replies: "Oh yeah, these are definitely raw images, but that's what made them so great. I was just getting the scene down as quickly as possible which didn't leave me any time to second guess how good the art was because I was only concerned about recording the details of the story. These sketches were done in 5-10 minutes, on cheap notebook paper(lines removed in Photoshop)with a chewed-on, stubby pencil, all while my friends leaned over my shoulder bellowing out suggestions. Oh, what great fun!!!!Spicy, indeed. lol"
30 Jan 2006	Sherman Skip Nodler	Loading... Hi My Freind, It was -40 or colder all last week. Warmed up to -18 today. Feels good. Nice drawings from the past. They're great. I think I'll look at the rest of your drawings over the week to spread the pleasure out. Skip Barbara J. Wickham replies: "-18! Wow. Time to bust out the fan and pina coladas. lol I shall never complain about our 'cold spells' again. Thank you so much for stopping in and taking a gander at my 'historical documents'. I've really enjoyed looking thru the dusty old portfolio and finding these little treasures. I hope the rest of my pics bring you some enjoyment this week."

Wickham replies: "It was a lot of fun. I just wish I had kept all the drawings. I cringe to think of how many ended up in the circular file because I thought the drawing was bad and not worth keeping! crys"
